Who organizes the safaris?
South Africa Travel Plan offers two remarkable walking safaris through Greater Kruger Park, one of the most beautiful wildlife reserves in the world.

The Safari
Walk single-file behind a professional, armed wildlife ranger in search of the Big Five. All Kruger walking tours will take place in Timbavati and Klaserie; large private game reserves only an open gate away from Kruger Park. Since the safaris involve approximately four hours of walking a day, a reasonable level of physical fitness is required. Game drive safaris take place in open 4X4 safari cars enabling you to see as many wild animals as possible.

Accommodation
Overnight stays on the Kruger walking tours take place in bush camps. These private camps are small, intimate and in the centre of open field/bush close to (usually dry) rivers. You'll sleep in large walk-in tents with beds and bed linens. Bathrooms are outside of the tents and consist of (open) showers with warm running water and toilets. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided and prior to your first game walk of the day you'll receive a cup of coffee/tea and/or a bowl of cereal.

Five Day Programme

Kruger walking tours - Bush camp

Day 1: Minibus transfer - Johannesburg/Pretoria - Kruger National Park

Early in the morning between 5.00 and 6.00, a minibus will pick you up at your hotel in Pretoria or Johannesburg and take you to a bush pub for lunch. Afterwards an open safari car will drive you to one of the bush camps, where you'll spend the next few nights. The accommodation may be fairly basic, but you'll get that true bush feeling and you're in for a trip of a lifetime. You'll have some time to get to know your fellow travellers and to get settled in. Then you're off for your first activity, which is usually a combination of a game walk and game drive. During the first short walk you'll learn the importance of being as quiet as a mouse, while remaining comfortable during your Kruger walking tours. You're likely to encounter giraffes, buffalos, wildebeests, rhinoceroses or other animals. This activity is followed by a night drive, an appetizer and dinner by the campfire.

Day 2, 3 and 4: Game walks and game drives

The programme for days two, three and four of the Kruger walking tours is built up out of the same elements: there will be two game walks a day and a night drive before dinner each evening.

After the first rays of sunlight and a light breakfast, it's time to head off on the first game walk. Walk directly from camp into the bush or sit back in a 4X4 and enjoy a drive on sandy roads to a distant location. Search the bush field for trails left by large game the previous night while enjoying a walk through the fresh morning air. On your return to camp, breakfast will be waiting for you and you'll have time to relax and unwind. Want to start the morning off a little less hectic? You can also wait quietly near a watering whole to see wild animals coming around for a drink?

After lunch it's time to hit the road again. Head off by 4X4 for another game walk. Once the walk is finished, you'll drive to an idyllic location to watch the sun set. Then return to the 4X4 to go on a nocturnal game drive back to camp. Join the ranger in searching for the extremely elusive leopard and cheetah. Seeing animals that only come out at night is a unique experience. After sunset temperatures drop significantly, so be sure to bring along warm clothes for the evening. Enjoy your dinner at the campfire and then make sure to turn in early to rest up for a new and exciting day.

Day 5: End of the Kruger walking tours module - Minibus transfer to Pretoria/Johannesburg

On the final morning of this module, take a short game walk and then return to camp. After breakfast there will be enough time to pack your belongings and to drive back to the bush pub. The transfer to Johannesburg or Pretoria will take place sometime in the afternoon (you'll arrive after 18.00) or if you like, transportation can be arranged to Hoedspruit where you can pick up a rental car and continue on your South Africa tour. Just ask our travel specialist for details.

Trail: The precise trail to be followed during Kruger walking tours depends on the season, the accessibility of the terrain, the weather, the amount of water in the park and the movement patterns of wild animals. All participants must sign a liability form prior to departure. The chosen trails can be walked by anyone, however an average level of physical fitness is necessary.

Must haves: backpack (and only a backpack), warm jacket, rain coat, cap/hat, clothing in neutral colours, comfortable walking shoes, towels/toiletries, flashlight, binoculars, camera and many rolls of film (or a digital camera). Cash for entrance fees, extra batteries for camera (there's no electricity available on location). Furthermore: sunglasses, sunscreen and mosquito repellent. Also remember to bring anti-malaria drugs. A sleeping bag is not necessary.
