Visit Ostriches in South Africa

Visiting the ostrich farms in Oudtshoorn is one of the highlights of our Route 62 tours. You'll drive through the arid region of the Small Karoo and on to the ostrich capital of the world: Oudtshoorn. This spacious town has broad lanes and lovely old buildings.

You'll have several different options on how to spend your afternoon. Perhaps you would like to try an ostrich egg omelette or very tender ostrich steak (a true delicacy) during lunch at an ostrich farm. Learn all about the world's largest bird or, if you're feeling adventurous, you could even saddle up for a ride.

If you would prefer to combine a visit to Oudtshoorn with vineyards, elephant spotting and beautiful Cape Town, take a look at our longer Garden Route self drive for inspiration.
Ostrich farming in Oudtshoorn reached its peak in the years leading up to the first world war. Back then ostrich feathers were a very sought after fashion accessory for hats and women's clothing. At that time, there were approximately 750,000 ostriches in the region. Industry profits were so sizeable that owners of ostrich farms could afford to build large mansions. These charming Victorian style houses can still be found in the Oudtshoorn area today.

When visiting an ostrich farm in South Africa, you'll discover how labour intensive the breeding of these special animals is. In South Africa, ostriches are raced and ridden by (light) jockeys, just like race horses. The ostrich produces a sound much like a growling lion, especially in breeding season when their skin becomes pink and they become extremely agitated. Beware of their sharp beak and powerful kicks, which can be dangerous.

 The Swartberg Pass

If you arrive in Oudtshoorn early, take a drive to the sleepy town of Prince Albert (which dates back to 1762). The town is a lush green oasis in the midst of the barren desert-like, Karoo. It lies approximately 50 kilometres from Oudtshoorn and is definitely worth a visit.

On the way , as an added bonus, you'll also see the spectacular Swartberg Pass. The mountain road over the pass is the most breathtaking road in all of South Africa. It's 25 km long and located at an altitude of 1440 metres. The mountain road, which winds between rock walls, was built by prisoners between 1881 and 1888. The remains of the stone huts they slept in during the construction of the road can still be seen today.
The most unique feature of the Swartberg Pass is that it was entirely built without using cement. All the stones fit together seamlessly! Along the side of the road you'll come across many wild flowers, such as protea's and watsonia's and from the top of the mountain you'll have a gorgeous view over all of Karoo. During your ride, stop and have a picnic at one of the many picnic locations or, during the summer, stop for a swim at one of the swimming areas. Please note: during our summer (winter in South Africa) the pass may be closed due to heavy snowfall. Be sure to find out whether the pass is open while you're in Oudtshoorn.

Here are a few facts on the largest non-flying bird:
