Whale watching from Plettenberg BayWhale watching South AfricaAccording to our travellers whale watching is one of the most unforgettable trips you can take in South Africa. Board a special boat and sail within metres from groups of dolphins and see whales at approximately 300 metres away from the boat. The special tour (Tour 2) is even allowed to approach whales as close as 50 metres away. There are more than 15,000 bottlenose dolphins in Plettenburg bay. They usually swim in groups, whereas humpback dolphins swim individually. If you're lucky you may see Orcas and Bryde whales. Whale watching season in South Africa runs from June/July to November, and during this time Southern Right whales swim towards the bay. Have a look at our dolphins in South Africa web page for more information. |

Whale watching South Africa Tour 1
While staying in Plettenberg Bay or nearby Knysna, you can go on a 2-hour whale watching & dolphin cruise. Not only does our partner have all the necessary permits in to operate these cruises, he also does so in a completely environmentally friendly way. He's even won several environmental awards in doing so. A percentage of the profits from these cruises is used to protect this amazing eco-system. Due to the popularity of these trips during whale season, we suggest booking the cruise as early as possible. There is a maximum of 12 participants allowed on this trip.
Whale watching South Africa Tour 2
We also offer a licensed whale cruise. A select number of boats used during these cruises are allowed to get even closer to the whales than regular whale watching cruises. The boats get as close as 50 metres away from a whale for a completely unforgettable experience! However, these cruises are slightly more expensive than standard cruises. The additional profits are used to maintain the eco-park. If you're able to afford it, we suggest going on this cruise. It's a spectacular adventure!
Note: Whether or not the cruise takes place depends on the weather; if weather conditions are poor, an alternate programme will be offered or the trip will be offered at another moment during your holiday. Obviously since these trips involve wild animals and unpredictable weather conditions, so we cannot guarantee that you will see dolphins and/or whales.
