Biking through wine country - Stellenbosch

Cycling through wine country

This is of the most enjoyable day trips that you can go on from Cape Town. Naturally you could drive through the wine country. However, what could be more fun than hopping on a mountain bike and biking through wine country? Bike through the vineyards at your own pace, visit wine cellars along the way and sample some of the most wonderful South African wines! Have lunch in pick nick style at a lake in between vineyards. The picture here shows the 'Buiten Verwachting' vineyards.

We will drive you to the forests surrounding Constantia by bus, where your biking trip will begin at Constantia ‘Nek’. Once you've adjusted your bike to your needs and filled your drinking bottle, you're off through some of the most beautiful wooded areas and vineyards of South Africa. Along the way you'll visit the Constantia and Uitsig vineyards for wine tasting. The view from the bike trail is truly beautiful. At Groot Constantia we'll visit South Africa's oldest vineyard, which dates back to 1685. The interior in the main house is still in exact the same state as it was in the 17th century. Take a step back in time in this vineyard estate (entrance fee not included in price of your trip). This farm prospered while owned by the Cloete Family in the 19th century, but has been state-owned for the last century.

Biking through Wine Country - Stopping for a rest
After bike riding in the midst of grape vines for a while, it's time for a lunch break. Mostly this is done between the Uitsig and Constantia vineyards near a beautiful small lake. Time to unwind and relax. When our travel specialists went on this tour they crossed 4 wine territories: Groot Constantia, Uitsig, Buiten Verwachting and Klein Constantia. They missed seeing the Steenberg vineyard because it proved to be to far away (or perhaps they had shouldn't have swallowed the wine they were tasting along the way.......).
After more than 4 hours of peddling and wine tasting, our travel specialists stopped at Peddlers on the Bend for a drink and a bite to eat (officially known as: Constantia’s Peddlers). This is a typical Cape Restaurant where you can enjoy a nice South African beer and if you've worked up an appetite you can enjoy boboti, ostrich steaks or other delicacies. After this stop you'll prefer hopping into the minivan over hopping on to your bike. The minivan will bring you back to Cape Town and you should be back at your hotel around 17.00.

Biking through Wine Country - Easy ride
Most Europeans know how to ride a bike: this is the only requirement for going on this trip. You'll be riding a ‘high-performance’ Trek MTB and will receive instructions from our guide on how to use the bike. You don't necessarily need prior experience on MTB’s. Almost 90% of the trip is down hill and approximately 10% of the trip is up hill. Just to be on the safe side, your guide will have a first-aid kit available during the trip. Our local guides Barry, Allister, Kenneth or Paul, will also make sure that the combination of biking and wine tasting remains safe and fun....
